About AAVM

Asian American Voices Media (AAVM) is a nonpartisan civic-information initiative that translates, verifies, and distributes credible U.S. news into Asian languages - currently Chinese (美华集萃), Korean (한미목소리), Vietnamese (Tiếng Nói Người Mỹ Gốc Việt), and Tagalog (Tinig ng Filipino Amerikano) - to improve access to trusted information for immigrant and diaspora communities.

AAVM sources reporting directly from established U.S. news organizations and applies a structured summarization, verification, and attribution framework supported by human editorial review and AI-enabled translation tools. The initiative is designed to strengthen media literacy and access to reliable information, particularly in multilingual contexts where language barriers and fragmented media ecosystems can increase vulnerability to misinformation.

Fellowship Overview

AAVM is seeking undergraduate and graduate student fellows to serve as Editorial Fellows, supporting the editorial selection and quality-control workflows that determine what AAVM covers. This fellowship offers hands-on experience at the intersection of journalism, public policy, and information integrity and is well-suited for students interested in media, governance, international affairs, or democratic institutions.

The Editorial Fellowship is distinct from AAVM's Language Fellowship. Where language fellows verify translation quality within a single language vertical, Editorial Fellows work upstream of all four verticals - selecting, verifying, and shaping the U.S. reporting that reaches immigrant and diaspora communities in their own languages. Target-language proficiency is not required; sound editorial judgment in English is.

The fellowship is remote and part-time, structured to accommodate academic schedules.

Responsibilities

Fellows will work under the supervision of AAVM's editorial leadership, applying AAVM's editorial selection standards, and may support the following activities:

Editorial Selection and Verification

• Reviewing the daily stream of candidate U.S. news articles and selecting which are appropriate for AAVM coverage, against a defined editorial selection rubric
• Applying AAVM's nonpartisan standards to politically and policy-adjacent content, and flagging sensitive calls for executive review
• Generating selected articles into AAVM's editorial workflow and dashboard
• Reviewing English-language base summaries for accuracy, faithful attribution, neutral framing, and fidelity to original source reporting before handoff
• Coordinating the handoff to language fellows for in-language translation review and verification
• Maintaining a record of daily selections to support editorial consistency and balance review
• Participating in periodic check-ins and feedback sessions with AAVM leadership

Mission and Strategy Engagement

• How we identify and prioritize communities and states where in-language civic information gaps are most acute
• How we determine coverage focus areas based on the U.S. policy and media landscape
• How editorial judgment, source selection, and distribution strategy intersect with broader questions of trust, access, and democratic participation

Fellows are also exposed to organizational decision-making around partnerships, expansion into new language communities, and the ethical and operational considerations of running a U.S.-based civic information platform.

Final editorial approval authority is retained by AAVM's editorial leadership; fellows operate the daily pipeline within established standards and escalate sensitive decisions. Graduate fellows may also assist with higher-level synthesis, documentation of editorial workflows, or mentorship of undergraduate fellows, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

• Eligibility: U.S. citizens only, due to the nature of the work involving civic-information review and information-integrity processes.
• Strong news judgment and the ability to distinguish credible reporting from opinion, advocacy, and low-quality sources
• Demonstrated interest in U.S. public policy, current affairs, journalism, or international relations
• Excellent attention to detail and comfort working with primary-source news material
• Sound, disciplined judgment when engaging with politically sensitive but nonpartisan content, including the discipline to apply a standard rather than personal preference
• Reliability and consistency in a remote, deadline-driven environment

Additional assets (not required)

• Coursework or experience in journalism, public policy, international affairs, Asian American, East Asian, or Southeast Asian studies, or media ethics
• Prior editorial, research, or newsroom experience
• Familiarity with the civic-information needs of immigrant or diaspora communities

Time Commitment and Compensation

Approximately 6 - 8 hours per week, remote, with selection work distributed across most days. This is a paid fellowship; compensation details are shared during the interview process.
